Don't you find it really annoying when you go to open a file that you opened recently, but because you just opened 20 files it's just fallen off the end of the recent file list. Of course, you can't remember what directory it was in so you have to waste 10 minutes or more searching your hard disk(s).
Even worse is when you can't even remember the name of the file.
HexEdit to the rescue.
HexEdit remembers the names of all files you have ever opened (actually 20,000 which is more than most people would open in a normal lifetime). These are displayed in the (somewhat misnamed) recent file dialog.
Not only that it remembers the time that you last opened it. (This and other info such as display options, highlights etc are stored in a text file called RecentFiles in your App data directory - eg C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\ECSoftware\HexEdit\RecentFiles).
So if you have forgotten the name of the file but know you opened it just after the meeting last Monday you can sort the list and home in on it quickly. You can also sort the list by size, last modification time etc etc.

Note: If you want to, you can clear out the "recent file list" file by using the Clear Recent File list option in the Clear History Lists dialog. This is found through the Clear History Lists button in the System page of the Options dialog.
Remember that this clears all formatting information associated with all files such as highlighting, position of mark, font, number of columns etc etc. However, it does not remove bookmarks which are stored separately (but which can be removed with the Clear Bookmarks option).

Since 2007 (HexEdit 3.2) you can associate 3 text fields with any file you open. These are called "category", "Keywords", and "comments". And you can sort the recently used file list by any of these columns.
Getting in te habit of assigning files to a category makes it very easy to track them down in the future.
